SANDWICH — Local author Ruth Doan McDougall has released an updated edition of two guide books, originally written by her father, on hiking in the Granite State.
"Explorer's Guide 50 More Hikes in New Hampshire" is the companion book "Explorer's Guide 50 Hikes in New Hampshire" Together, the two guides are staples of the New England hiking scene. Now, both books are available in new, updated editions produced in full color with new full-color topographical maps as well.
The two guides are helpful resources for hikers of all levels of ability.
Daniel Doan hiked the White Mountains of New Hampshire for nearly 70 years while writing novels, short stories, the memoir "Our Last Backpack," and two New Hampshire hiking guides. Recipient of the New Hampshire Writers' Project Lifetime Achievement Award, he died in 1993.
For years his daughter, Ruth Doan MacDougall, has for years helped keep Doan's hiking guides up to date. A novelist as well, MacDougall, who lives in Center Sandwich, received the Writer's Project Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
