FRANKLIN — The 50th annual Youth and Government Week, sponsored by Franklin Elks Lodge #1280, Franklin city government and Franklin High School will culminate this evening at the Elks Lodge where students will showcase what they have learned by holding a mock city council meeting.
Those students playing the role of the city council, who were elected by fellow students, got a close up view of how city government operates earlier this week, will tackle an agenda following a dinner at 6 p.m. which is put on by the Elks for all participants and their families.
During the kickoff on Tuesday the students received an overview of City Government from City Manager Elizabeth Dragon, City Department Heads and guest speakers, which included Franklin's Mayor Ken Merrifield, City Councilor George Dzujna and Legislative Representatives Leigh Webb, Scott Burns and Lori Carey.
''Franklin is one of the last few, if not the very last community still holding on to this longstanding tradition of Youth Government. It is important to carry on this tradition and keep our youth educated and engaged in government,'' said City Manager Dragon.
