Local dentists expanding their ‘Smile School’ program

LACONIA — Two local dentists are expanding their program to bring dental care education to area elementary school students across the region.

Dr. Melissa Kennell and Dr. Matthew Smith of Children's Dentistry of the Lakes Region are involved with the Give Kids a Smile program sponsored by the American Dental Association. More than 1,500 central New Hampshire youngsters have benefited from the program so far.

Kennell and Smith have developed the Lakes Region Smile School — assemblies which include a brief elementary-age appropriate presentation, interactive questions and answers, a fun promotional video and take-home toothbrushes for each child. Assemblies were hosted by a dental team, including a pediatric dentist and hygienist – and took place on Fridays at 10 local elementary schools throughout the Lakes Region and Plymouth regional areas.

In an effort to make oral healthcare a priority for children and families, not only in the Lakes Region; and, in connection with the opening of their new Plymouth location at Boulder Point on the Tenney Mountain Highway, Kennell and Smith were excited to bring this educational program to Plymouth regional schools. Expanding the Lakes Region Smile School was a resounding success as the dental team of the Children's Dentistry of the Lakes Region reached and educated over 1,547 students.

Expectations for Smile School 2015 are high, with Kennell and Smith committed and determined to reach even more children throughout the North Country, in a combined effort to educate children and their families while offering convenient and accessible pediatric dental care to these communities.
