LACONIA — The Laconia Area Bicycle Exchange has found a location which it can operate from, a garage next to the Big Banana Store on 229 Messer Street which is located just across from the WOW Trail.
Donations of bicycles for the exchange will be accepted from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today in conjunction with a food tasting event sponsored by the Big Banana Store.
The purpose of the Laconia Area Bicycle Exchange (LABE) Will be to provide a means of inexpensive alternative transportation in the form of reliable and maintained bicycles, made available to people who would benefit with greater mobility as it relates to work, family and personal living.
The focus of the Exchange would be for people who have no means to afford an automobile or who have no valid drivers license. A referral program would be used by working with area human service organizations that would refer people to the Exchange.
The next meeting for the Bicycle Exchange will be, at the Better Together Program on Thursday April, 24 at 4 p.m. at the Laconia Middle School Library, 2nd floor.
John Rogers, who is organizing the program, says it will provide a means of greater mobility for those in our community with limited means and helps them with stable employment and meeting personal responsibilities such as doctor's appointments. Also family and recreational benefits. Other benefits of the program will be utilize the recycling of bicycles that otherwise are discarded or sent out of the community to serve other areas.
