LACONIA — A sure sign of spring in the Lakes Region is the Annalee Thorndike Art Competition, currently on display at the Belknap Mill. Annalee Thorndike set up this merit scholarship in the year 2000, when she made a generous donation to the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, establishing an endowment fund. Each year since then, this fund has helped many Lakes Region High School graduating seniors with their plans to major in art and continue to develop their artistic goals. In this way, Annalee's love of the arts is perpetuated.
This year, nine student artists from Lakes Region High Schools have submitted examples of their work. They are Kelsey Burbee, Kristen Jarvis, Emily Wernig, Michael Xioa, Brandon Sheppard, Holly Smith, Alyssa Woods, Lydia Swedberg and James Horne.
Well-known area artists Mary Ellen Boudman, Jeri R Bouthamy, and Roger Gagne will judge the artwork.
The public is invited to view this display at the Mill, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Winners of the Annalee Thorndike Art Awards will be announced at a reception at the Mill on Thursday, April 10, beginning at 7 p.m. Members of the Thorndike family will also be in attendance.
