LACONIA — The Community Colleges of New Hampshire Foundation has announced that a new scholarship fund is now available for students in the Fire Science Programs at Lakes Region Community College.
The Frank Fernald Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to carry on Fernald's legacy of firefighting and informing the public about fire protection and fire science. The Frank Fernald Scholarship Fund is for students who are enrolled part- or full-time in fire technology, fire protection, or fire science at Lakes Region Community College. Three $500 scholarships will be awarded in the spring of 2015.
Fernald was a firefighter who retired from the Portsmouth Fire Department with the rank of captain. He passed away in 2011. During his time as a full time, active duty firefighter, Fernald attended classes nights and weekends to earn his degree in Fire Science from Lakes Region Community College.
After his retirement from the fire service, Fernald continued his passion for firefighting by photographing fires battled by many New England departments. These photographs became a resource for training and investigations. He also became well known by sharing these images through slideshow presentations throughout the State and region.
Fernald understood the importance of civil service. Upon his passing, many people spoke of what a great influence he had on their lives. He inspired many people to become firefighters in Portsmouth and the surrounding Seacoast area. He encouraged people to follow their dreams with his contagious smile, great sense of humor and an expectation of success.
Frank's family and friends have joined together to establish an endowment fund in his memory in the hope of enabling others to pursue their passion for a career in firefighting. The Community Colleges of New Hampshire Foundation website features the scholarship application and a donation page for friends who wish to contribute to the scholarship fund: www.ccsnh.edu/foundation.
