He stepped into the role of acting Chief with the departure of Chief Stephen Adams in February 2013 and was promoted to Chief in October of that year.

"With the departure of Chief Stephen Adams, John was asked to, and readily agreed to, lead the Department through the transition to a new Chief." said Selectmen Kevin Waldron "He stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam, providing the leadership and guidance to members of the Department assuring the residents of Northfield remain well protected."
