With the death of Ray Burton, Mike Cryans has stepped up to run for the 1st District Executive Council seat long held by Burton. Cryans is a 17 year County Commissioner, a former teacher, consultant to small business and board member of a community hospital. He states he is determined to build a strong economy in our northern communities and is dedicated to their well-being. He is currently employed at Headrest, a non-profit organization which deals with substance abuse recovery. Mike comes from Littleton and lives in Hanover, but his work has focused on all parts of central and northern New Hampshire. The Special Election to fill the remainder of Ray Burton's term is scheduled for March 11.
The New Hampshire Executive Council is unique. Five regionally elected councilors give advice and consent, working as a check on the Governor's executive power. The Executive Council approves or rejects all significant state contracts, judicial nominations, appointments of leaders to state agencies and sets priorities for all state highway and infrastructure projects.
Ray Burton's recent death has opened one of the five positions and so one of five votes on matters that come before the Council. The 1st District covers most of northern and much of central New Hampshire and was held by Burton for eighteen terms.
