Local Children's Author visits Laconia Head Start

LACONIA — Karel Hayes, author/illustrator of 12 children's books, visited with the four preschool classes at Laconia Head Start and Community Childcare on Wednesday, December 11.

She arrived at 9:15 and went to each classroom, where the children had made multicolored garlands and gold stars to decorate their classrooms. This idea was inspired by Ms. Hayes' book Winter Visitors , which the children had read with their teachers. Ms. Hayes set up in one classroom and the children came in one class at a time - where she read Snowflake Comes to Stay, which she wrote and illustrated, and Who's Been Here? written by Fran Hogkins and illustrated by Ms. Hayes. She also talked to them about the book they had read, Winter Visitors, and demonstrated how she begins her illustrations.

When their time with Ms. Hayes was over, and the next class arrived, the children moved to the adjacent classroom for hot chocolate and cookies, which was almost as much fun as visiting with a real author. Ms. Hayes joined the last group of children for a snack, before heading on her way.
