WATERVILLE, Maine — Christopher R. Downes of Waterville, and formerly of Laconia and Gilford, New Hampshire, passed away on Feb. 1, 2018, in the hospital in Augusta after a period of declining health.
Chris was born in Laconia, New Hampshire, on April 7, 1950, son of Christopher T. Downes Jr. of Laconia, and Patricia Wright Downes of Gilford, New Hampshire.
Chris was a baker and a cook but he liked baking better. He won awards for his carrot cake and cheesecake, and he liked making wedding cakes.
Chris opened a bakery in Meredith, New Hampshire, for a while, then he moved to Wells, and bought a bed and breakfast. Later he sold that business and went back to baking for Clay Hill Farm Restaurant in Ogunquit until he got hurt. Chris moved to Waterville and bought a café at Mount St. Joseph’s nursing home until he got ill and retired.
Chris’ hobbies were growing flowers, plants and flowered bushes, and going to antique shops.
He was predeceased by his father, Christopher T. Downes Jr.; his maternal grandmother, Germaine Pratt and his grandfather Percy Wright; his paternal grandmother Grace Paige and grandfather Christopher T. Downes Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Wright Downes; a sister, Pamela Fraser and husband Bruce; two nephews, Jason Fraser and Christopher Welch, and a niece, Heidi Roberson; a great-niece, Savana Fraser, and great-nephew Blake Robertson; aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Direct Cremation of Maine assisted the family with arrangements.
