FRANKLIN — Lorraine “Lorrie” Mary Alice Carignan-Martel, 70, passed away at Dartmouth-Hitchcock on Nov. 28, 2017, from injuries resulting from a fall in her home.
Lorrie obtained a degree in mental health in 1982, and also received a diploma in nursing in 1991. In earlier years, prior to her 25-year nursing career, she was a beautician and owned L&L Beauty Nook in Franklin for five years. She operated a board and care home for seniors in Andover and was a Mental Health Worker III at Concord State Hospital for 18 years. She retired in 2016.
Lorrie’s hobbies and interests included arts and crafts and crocheting/knitting for loved ones. Her daughter Paula states, "Mom was a classy dame of her time." Also adding her mother was quite the interior decorator and could make any dull room/house very beautiful and comfy. Her other kids say she was a social butterfly and was the "Best Party Coordinator/Planner." Her children will greatly miss all the family gatherings she held, which truly was the glue that held them together. She was in a wine club, enjoyed sipping fine wine with family and friends. She was a concert and theater goer. She loved dancing and was a member of the Elks #0876. She also had a very large collection of religious crosses and had helped feed the needy at Hands Across The Table, a program in Laconia. Not only was she a devoted mother to her children, but also to any pet she owned. She had a service dog, Apache (who recently passed away), for medical conditions she battled. Lorrie felt that "life is much better with a dog."
All who knew Lorrie will always remember how caring and giving she was, with a huge heart.
Survivors include her husband of 27 years, James Louis Martel; her sister, Pauline Wells of Florida; daughters Angela L. Whittemore of Wilmot, Paula Madonna Dorval-Line of Atascadero, California, and Bridgette Carlie Leroux of Laconia; son Edward A. Dorval Sr. of Franklin; six grandchildren; a nephew and two nieces; and five great-grandchildren that she enjoyed spoiling.
Lorrie was predeceased by her parents, Leopold and Lucienne Carignan of Franklin.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 30 Church St., Laconia. There will be a "Celebration of Life" after the service from 4-8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 17 Sugarbush Lane, Gilford.
Memorial contributions may be made to a Humane Society of your choice.
