LACONIA — The Laconia and Winnisquam High School Hockey Team received an assist from the community when sponsors stepped up and donated $2,200 to buy the team new jerseys.
"We had a fundraiser for our jerseys, and we needed $2,200," said Jim Shevlin, Laconia-Winnisquam Booster Club president.
Sponsors that stepped forward included the United Steelworkers Union, Local 8566; McDonald's of Laconia and Tilton; the Laconia Kiwanis; AutoServ Tilton; Irwin Auto Group; Fay's Boat Yard of Gilford; Belknap Tire & Auto Repair of Laconia; Marc Joyal and Crossovers Pro Shop; the New England Wolves; and New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival.
The club also received support from other sponsors, so they can buy warm-ups and training aids, and pay for ice time at Merrill Fay Arena, Shevlin noted.
Tiffany Luther, vice president of the Booster Club, said, "The community really reached out and helped us quite a bit."
Three new coaches have joined the team, making this a "building year," Luther said.
First-year head coach Kent Finemore is joined by assistant coaches Marc Joyal, Bill Madan and Dylan Martel.
"We have a very small budget for each school, so we have to fund raise to pay for our ice and new uniforms and things of that nature," Luther said.
In the preseason, the Wolfpack volunteered at the Laconia Christmas Village, took a collection for Mix 94.1's Cash for Cans and played in two preseason jamborees.
The team is considered young, with a freshman, Derek Derynioski, playing goalie.
On Wednesday, the team suffered a 12-0 loss to Somersworth. The team lost by the same score to Kennett High on Dec. 21.
Luther said the athletes are showing strong effort.
"They're working well together and playing as a team," Luther said.
