HOLDERNESS — Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is proud to announce the publication of a new book called "Nearer to Nature" by the center's naturalist, Margaret Gillespie. Featuring select readings from center's quarterly newsletter, Tracks and Trails, and photographs of the Science Center animals and landscape. This new book is a compelling compilation of information, experiences, and investigations about natural New Hampshire.

Gillespie is dedicated to exploring nature and leading educational activities for both children and adults. During her time at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, Gillespie has worked diligently to produce both educational and inspiring writings since 1995, used in the Science Center's quarterly newsletter. Her pieces focus on her unique experiences in New Hampshire; delving into integral background information, exciting facts, and key clues for readers to find the species, flora, or fauna, on their own. Since her first newsletter writing, inquiries for a compilation book on Gillespie's work have been long sought-after.

In celebration of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center's 50th anniversary, this new book commemorates both the rich history of the Science Center, as well as Gillespie's own personal stories and adventures as a naturalist. The book features twenty-four pieces, organized by each season of the year. Articles are accompanied by illustrations and photographs of the Science Center's ambassador animals.

To complement the book on its release, there will be a three-part nature walk series. Titled Nearer to Nature Walks, adults or older teens are invited to accompany author and naturalist Gillespie on mini outdoor adventures highlighting topics covered in the book. Running from July to September, the outings are two-and-a-half hours long, and showcase Gillespie's favorite natural places.

The first, Tuesday, July 19, will explore the untouched, secluded wetland and forests of Unsworth Preserve in Sandwich. On Thursday, Aug. 18, Gillespie will lead an adventure through the Chamberlin Reynolds Memorial Forest in Center Harbor where Gillespie will guide participants through upland forest, swamp boardwalk, and shoreline trail. The series concludes with Gillespie leading a Nearer to Nature Walk through some lesser-known spots at Squam Lake Natural Science Center for a chance to witness its quiet beauty. Join Margaret Gillespie to experience her writings, first-hand, for a cost of $7 per member, or $9 per non-member, per session. Pre-registration is required by called 968-7194.
