LACONIA — The transition from homeless people to homeless pets was a natural progression for the new manager of the New Hampshire Humane Society's volunteer program, Tamara Saxby. She is a lover of dogs, especially senior canines, and those that are the most misunderstood.
Saxby brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in volunteer program management, staff and volunteer training, and grant writing, tempered with empathy and professionalism when working with the underprivileged and those suffering from addiction. She directed the Friends Emergency Housing Program in Concord for 10 years before relocating to the sunnier climes of Florida where she managed the Hope for Families Second Chance Thrift Store & Training Center in Vero Beach. Under Saxby's leadership, not only did she cultivate and expand the agency, the thrift store raised significant revenue for the charity. Returning to the Granite State, she worked as the volunteer coordinator for Families In Transition, also based in the capital, prior to joining our team in January of this year.
"I'm thrilled to be here at the Humane Society," said Saxby, "and for the opportunity to work with all the wonderful volunteers. Volunteers bring such passion and dedication to their roles and are the backbone of the agency helping NHHS serve their mission. In addition to my professional experience, I've been a longstanding advocate for animal protection and welfare and have served as a volunteer with several animal rescue groups, homeless outreach services, a child advocacy agency and a volunteer with the Public Defender's office in Vero Beach/Fort Pierce, Florida. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! "
Saxby resides in Laconia with Lexi, her 13-year-old golden retriever mix, adopted from a shelter in Tennessee, the "Volunteer State."
She will host a gathering for all the shelter's volunteers in April, during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, but don't wait that long to meet her. She can be reached at 524-3252, ext. 309 - via email, or simply pop in and say hello.
