LACONIA — Boy Scout Troop 68 will deliver the Peace Light of Bethlehem to St. André Bessette Catholic Parish and light peoples’ candles after every Mass this weekend with a flame that originates from the location of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. People are encouraged to bring their own candles or lantern and take the flame home with them.
Every year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light from the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus was born. The light is then flown to Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations across Europe and the rest of the world.
The Peace Light of Bethlehem campaign was organized in 1986 by the Austrian Broadcasting Company as part of a large charitable relief mission, Light into Darkness, for children in need. Since then it has blossomed into an international phenomenon inspiring hope and peace throughout the world.
The Peace Light first came to the United States in 2001 when Canadian Scouts brought it to Ground Zero.
